Psychoanalysis for Asian Americans | Meera Lee | Licensed Psychoanalyst | New York City

Many Asian American individuals and Asian international students encounter pressures related to high achievement and academic and professional expectations, often associated with a “model minority” stereotype. Despite apparent success, one may feel isolated, experience a sense of being an outsider, or find it difficult to speak about what remains unrecognized.

These pressures are often accompanied by loneliness and a certain hesitation in articulating one’s experience, including issues of race and sexuality, within family or social relations. It can be challenging to find a place where these experiences may be spoken about and taken seriously.

Psychoanalysis offers a space for this. By speaking to an analyst, one may begin to encounter what returns in the form of repeating patterns, impasses in relationships, or persistent dissatisfaction.

Through this analytic traversal, it becomes possible to reorganize a relation to these stalemates and to find a way of situating one’s desire that is singular to each person.
